Room Makeover Edition

A couple of weeks ago I got this nice light gray bedspread for our king sized bed for 25 cents at our church's rummage sale.  Whoo hoo!  Unfortunately, a 25 cent bedspread didn't match the curtains which I had been meaning to change out for a while anyway.  So a quick (not!) trip to Ikea got us these lovely dark gray Rivta curtains.   While we were at it, I looked on craigslist to see if I could find a headboard for our bed.  I had looked before without ever much luck, but this time I happened upon this metal scroll headboard and footboard for a steal!    It makes such a difference in there, and it's nice to not have to have the bed pushed up against the wall so we don't lose our pillows.  Having the bed pulled out from the wall a few inches also allows the curtains to be closed on nights when the moon shines in the window preventing good sleep, which happened every month.

I was never completely happy with how it looked in there before, which is why I am not showing before pictures.  :)

So while we were at it I figured it was about time that we moved the kids rooms around.  I had been totally dreading it because the boys needed to move into the girls room, Claire needed to move into the boys room and the girls needed to move into the guest room.  Every room needed serious help and a new coat of paint, and I really did not feel like starting.  It was a lot of work and took two good weeks to get it done, but we finally finished (mostly) and we are so happy with the results.
Claire's room is now in the room adjoining ours (this picture is looking in from our bedroom).  Believe it or not but both boys were in here before.  It used to be the master bedroom closet!  The floor was bare wood and in terrible shape so we laid the easiest floor to lay ever.  Thankfully the color was still good in here for Claire so I brought in the rocking chair, a sheepskin rug (from another room) and an end table for reading material for me.  I got these super cute vinyl wall decals, and her room was complete!  It is so much more convenient having her in there than in with the girls for now.
Next the girls' room needed to be transformed to to a boys' room.  Poor Asher had still be sleeping in a toddler bed, so it was about time he moved into a big boy's bed.  We painted the room Devonshire Gray, the trim got touched up with a new coat of white and we got these fun canopies from Ikea for over their beds.  Thankfully they were super cheap and matched the duvet covers that we already had.  I then put up these vintage airplane wall decals and we added some better lighting.  Being that we live in a really old house, the lighting situation is pretty poor and not every room has overhead lighting.  The boys are really excited about their new room and it is nice for them to have more space.

We are still working on the girls room so I will wait to post those pictures.  We thought we were done in there, but we came up with some fun ideas to make their new room special, and it may take a couple more weeks to finish up, but hopefully soon.

Besides that, the upstairs hallway got a new coat of paint, which really brightened it up up there.  The upstairs had been in such desperate need of help for a long time with random pipes sticking out of walls, old wiring needing to be taken out, random holes in the walls and caulking that needed to be done.  It feels so nice to have it be a lot more presentable up there.  Of course in an old house it's never "done" but it's a lot better than it was!

The Zoo and Wildlife on the Homefront

I see that the last time I posted was September 30th.  Yikes!  The last two weeks I have been so busy overhauling the upstairs bedrooms I haven't had a moment to compose a post, even though there has been a lot to post about.   Besides that, Claire has been teething something awful and waking up at night crying for an hour  or more at a time.  I finally broke down and bought a new amber teething necklace to replace the one I lost and she is back to almost normal.  At least she doesn't need Tylenol anymore anyway and she isn't crying uncontrollably.

So a couple weeks ago we went down to the Philly Zoo.  Christian has a friend whose wife works at the Zoo, and last time Christian saw his friend he gave us a bunch of free passes to get in.  We have been going on so many free field trips this year it's awesome!  Especially since the new improved budget doesn't allow for as many as we were taking last year.
Christian was having way too much fun taking pictures of this giraffe, who was acting like he had peanut butter stuck to the roof of his mouth.
We love the Chinese Red Panda!
Christian overheard a zoo keeper remark to someone that they keep the flamingos pink by feeding them beta carotene.
"Good grief!  Are we almost done!?

Besides the zoo the kids have been enjoying the unseasonable warm weather lately and spending a lot of time outside.  They are out nearly all day sometimes, barely coming in to eat and then heading back out again.  I gave them off school this past week so I could finish up the bedrooms and they kept themselves quite busy playing outside.
One of their favorite things do do is to climb this Bradford Pear that Christian and I keep threatening to cut down.  If you are looking to plant a tree please do not plant a Bradford Pear.  They are the junkiest trees but how do you cut down your kids' favorite tree?  :(
This little box turtle was found wandering around the back yard recently.
It's that time of the year, and wildlife is on the move.  We have been seeing a lot of praying mantises, turtles, spiders and other creepy crawlies lately.  The kids will put them in a box or jar for a few hours to examine them, and then send them on their merry way.  Asher had a pet caterpillar that he kept right with him all day today, saying he was just like his Daddy.  He was even so kind as to let the caterpillar curl up and take a nap on his shirt while I read him a story.  :)  I love 4-year-olds.

As soon as I get the curtains up upstairs I'll post pictures of the finished rooms!  Stay tuned...
